In practice, we choose the size of the tank based on the size and weight of the subject (puppet or otherwise). In this photo, we have several tanks in a range of sizes, including a triaxial one, that we use during production. We also have tanks so small they can be hidden easily by other props.

In this photo we have rods and ball joints of various sizes and weights that we use when filming for stop-motion. Some of these were in fact hand-fashioned by an expert, so the shapes and connecting tools are all different. Others are store bought.
